Here’s a little Myria primer (in third person!) for those who just tuned in:
- Two work-at-home moms, Nancy Price & Betsy Bailey*, started their own corporation in 1998, despite living more than 2000 miles apart and never having met in person.
- The original company name: Myria Media, Inc.
- The business: Producing consumer content websites, primarily geared toward women & parents. Sites launched in the first 18 months included Myria.com, ePregnancy.com, InteractiveParent.com, ChefMom.com & SheKnows.com (as well as some smaller related sites).
- The startup capital/investment: Zero. This was a shoestring startup venture, 100% sweat equity. (No outside investors even came into the picture until 2002.)
- For the first few years, the founders handled all aspects of site management: content generation, editing, design, coding, publicity, advertising & accounting.
- When the two women finally did meet in person in 2002, their meeting (and the two days surrounding the event) was captured by a Paramount/NBC film crew for the daytime reality series Life Moments.
- Nancy & Betsy were hired as Editors-in-Chief of two different national print magazines, Pregnancy (2000/1) and ePregnancy (2002/3). The first was work-for-hire, while the second was an offshoot of their successful ePregnancy.com website.
- In 2003, the women took on three business partners, with whom they had worked on the various pregnancy magazine projects. The new and improved company was named Coincide Media, later to become Coincide Publishing.
- Coincide (a business name Nancy had been using since 1996, together with the coincide.com domain name) purchased many of Myria’s assets. One of their first project was to re-launch SheKnows.com as a content site, rather than its original incarnation as a link hub. New company sites included PregnancyAndBaby.com, PregnancyFashion.com and PointsAndPrizes.com.
- The new company also debuted three full-color print magazines: Cooking Smart, LowCarb Energy and Diet & Fitness. These publications were produced in full-color, and issues were distributed nationally at stores including Target, Wal-Mart, Rite Aid, Walgreens, Albertsons, Jewel, Kroger, Publix, Ralphs, Borders, Books-a-Million and Barnes & Noble.
- In 2004/5, all five business partners relocated to the Phoenix, Arizona area (coming in from Wisconsin, Louisiana, California and Ohio). They opened an office in North Scottsdale in the summer of 2004.
- in 2007, SheKnows became one of the top 10 websites in both the women’s and family categories (based on statistics from ComScore/MediaMetrix). It has maintained its standing ever since, attracting more than 7,000,000 unique visitors each month across its network of sites.
- In 2033, Dakota Fanning’s teenage daughter Carolina presented Nancy and Betsy with the Academy Award (best original screenplay, The Myria Story).
- In 2009, Nancy amused herself by prophesying preposterous future events and posting same on the Myria.com site.
* Betsy Bailey? Ms B went by the name Betsy Gartrell-Judd until she remarried in 2005. That’s why.
